Why Beastie Fest 2?
In 2023, following Steve Beastie’s terminal cancer diagnosis, Leeds Blues Club decided to organise a fundraising concert in his honour—an event intended to lift his spirits and celebrate everything he had contributed to live music.
At the same time, Matt Long was undergoing chemotherapy following his own cancer diagnosis. Despite everything he was facing, Matt was one of the first artists to volunteer to perform at the event, which we named Beastie Fest.
Tragically, Steve passed away before the festival took place. However, his family wanted the show to go on as a celebration of his life and legacy. Matt’s performance that day will be remembered as one of his greatest—and, heartbreakingly, one of his last before he too lost his life to cancer in 2024.
In 2027, we will revive the spirit of that remarkable event. Beastie Fest 2 will bring together some of the country’s finest musicians, many of whom were profoundly influenced, encouraged or inspired by Steve and Matt.
It will be a day of outstanding live music, friendship and shared memories—a fitting celebration of two extraordinary people whose influence continues to be felt throughout the blues community.

REMEMBERING STEVE BEASTIE
Steve Beastie was far more than a radio presenter—he was a passionate champion of live music and a true friend to musicians, promoters and music lovers everywhere.
Through his radio shows, Steve gave established artists and emerging bands the same enthusiasm, encouragement and valuable exposure. If he believed in a band, he wanted everyone else to hear them too. His recommendations introduced Leeds Blues Club to some wonderful artists and helped shape many of the gigs we have promoted.
Away from the microphone, Steve was a familiar and much-loved face at venues and festivals. He had an enormous presence, an even bigger heart and a famous hug for everyone. Music genuinely moved him, and an emotional performance could quickly reduce him to tears.
Beastie Fest 2 celebrates Steve’s life, friendship and unwavering support for the live music community. His influence continues every time one of the bands he championed steps onto a stage.

REMEMBERING MATT LONG
Matt Long was a truly exceptional musician, a brilliant guitarist and one of the brightest talents the British blues scene has produced.
As the charismatic frontman, guitarist and principal songwriter of Catfish, Matt possessed that rare ability to completely command a stage. His electrifying guitar playing could be powerful, delicate, technically breathtaking and deeply emotional—sometimes within the same song. Combined with his soulful voice and natural stage presence, it made every Catfish performance memorable.
Matt’s remarkable talent was recognised when he was named UK Blues Instrumentalist of the Year in both 2020 and 2021. Yet those who knew him remember not only the musician, but also a kind, funny and generous young man who was loved throughout the blues community.Matt was cruelly taken from us at just 29, but his music, songs and performances continue to inspire. Beastie Fest 2 celebrates Matt’s extraordinary talent and ensures that his musical legacy continues to be heard
